Melissa Joan Hart was born on April 18, 1976, in Smithtown, New York, United States. She is the eldest child of Paula Hart, a talent manager and producer, and William Hart, who worked as a carpenter, clam hatchery worker, and entrepreneur. Melissa has four siblings—Emily, Elizabeth, Brian, and Trisha—and all of them have had involvement in acting. She also has two half-sisters, Alexandra and Samantha, who are likewise engaged in the entertainment industry, making acting a shared family pursuit.

After her parents divorced in the early 1990s, Melissa moved with her mother and siblings to New York City. Both of her parents later remarried. Her first name was inspired by the song “Melissa” by the Allman Brothers Band, while her middle name was taken from her maternal grandmother. She also selected “Catherine” as her confirmation name, although she does not commonly use it.
