Michael Michele was born in 1966 in Evansville, Indiana. She is the elder of two daughters. Her father, who is white, worked as a furniture-rental entrepreneur, while her mother, who is Black, was employed at Bristol-Myers. Michele was named after her mother’s best friend, Michael Ann. She attended Howard Roosa Elementary School before moving on to Benjamin Bosse High School, where she was an active member of the basketball team. Her athleticism in high school reflected her early interest in sports, although she later pivoted towards acting. She is the mother of one son, J. Brandon, born on December 21, 2004.
Michael Michele began her entertainment career with appearances in television commercials and music videos, including those for Eric Gable and Freddie Jackson. She made her film debut in 1991 with the role of Selina in the crime drama New Jack City. That same year, she appeared in the television series Private Times.
Her breakout role came when she portrayed Detective Rene Sheppard on NBC’s police procedural series Homicide: Life on the Street. She later gained further recognition for her role as Dr. Cleo Finch on NBC’s long-running medical drama ER.
