Montell Jordan, an influential figure in American R&B and hip-hop, was born on December 3, 1968, in South Central Los Angeles, where he spent his early years. Pursuing higher education, he relocated to Malibu, California, to attend Pepperdine University. While at Pepperdine, he joined the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and graduated with a degree in communications.
Although Montell Jordan had a long-standing passion for hip-hop and R&B music, his professional music career began in 1995 when he signed with Def Jam Recordings. That same year, he released his debut album, This Is How We Do It, featuring a lead single of the same name. The single became a major breakthrough for Jordan, quickly climbing to the top of the charts.
"This Is How We Do It" reached the #1 position on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B Singles Chart, holding the top spot from April 15 to May 27, 1995. The success of the single propelled the album to platinum status, selling over one million copies. The song also achieved international success, peaking at #1 on Canada's RPM Dance chart, #7 on Australia's ARIA chart, and #5 in New Zealand's Recorded Music NZ chart.
Following the massive success of his debut, Jordan released his second album, More..., in 1996. Although it did not reach the heights of his debut, it still performed respectably, peaking at #47 on the Billboard 200 and earning a gold certification from the RIAA. Over the next decade, he released five more albums: Let's Ride (1998), Get It On...Tonite (1999), Montell Jordan (2002), Life After Def (2003), and Let It Rain (2008).
