Mos Def, born Dante Terrell Smith on December 11, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York, is an acclaimed actor, rapper, and activist. He is the eldest of twelve children and was raised primarily by his mother in Brooklyn, while his father lived elsewhere in New York. His upbringing in a large family amid a community affected by violence, addiction, and crime deeply influenced his artistic perspective and personal values.

Career Beginnings and Musical Rise

Mos Def began his career in entertainment at the age of 14, working as a child actor under the stage name Dante Beze. His early television appearances set the stage for a varied and successful career across music and film. In 1994, he formed the short-lived hip-hop group Urban Thermo Dynamics with his siblings. He gained broader recognition through his solo work and as one half of the renowned hip-hop duo Black Star, alongside Talib Kweli.
