Nancy Morgan was born on April 1, 1949, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is the daughter of Marjorie and Samuel A. Morgan. A noteworthy family connection is her uncle, John “Red” Morgan, a decorated World War II bomber pilot who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1943. His heroic story later inspired the classic war film Twelve O’Clock High.
Inspired by her uncle’s legacy and the movie based on his experiences, Nancy Morgan pursued a career in acting. In 1975, she made her film debut as Jennifer in Fraternity Row. The following year, she appeared on television as Jenny in the series McMillan & Wife. Interestingly, roles named Jennifer or Jenny surfaced repeatedly during her career in the early years.
1977 marked a particularly eventful year for Morgan. She co-starred as Paula Powers in the action-comedy film Grand Theft Auto, and made guest appearances on television in Good Times as Cindy Crebbins and The San Pedro Beach Bums as Julie. That same year, she married actor and producer John Ritter, widely known for his role as Jack Tripper on the ABC sitcom Three’s Company.
In 1979, she played roles in the satirical comedy Americathon and the historical miniseries Backstairs at the White House. Two years later, in 1980, she starred in Pray TV as Peggy Williams.
Soon after, Nancy took a break from acting to focus on raising her family. Her first child, Jason Ritter, was born on February 17, 1980. Jason graduated from New York University in 2002 and was nominated for an Emmy in 2012 for his guest role on the NBC drama Parenthood.
