Omar Sharif

Omar Sharif was known as an Egyptian actor. He was most famous for his roles in classic films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, and Funny Girl.

Background

Omar Sharif was born as Michel Demitri Shalhoub on April 10, 1932 in Alexandria, Egypt to Joseph Shalhoub, a wood trader, and his better half, Claire Saada. Of Lebanese and Syrian ancestry, the youthful Michel was raised a Roman Catholic. He was taught his education at Victoria College in Alexandria and took a degree in math and physics from Cairo University. A while later moving on from college, he entered the family lumber business.

Career

Omar began his acting career in his native country in the 1950s, but he is best known for his appearances in both English and American productions. His most significant role was when he played Sherif Ali in Lawrence of Arabia

Before making his English-language film debut with "Lawrence of Arabia", for which he earned a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination and worldwide acclaim, Sharif turned into a star in Egyptian films. His first motion picture was the Egyptian film Struggle in the Valley (1954) opposite the famous Egyptian actress Faten Hamamah whom he ended up marrying in 1955.
