Barbra Streisand was born on April 24, 1942 in New York City, New York. She is an amazing performer and has reached the greatest heights in both the music industry as a singer and songwriter and also the film industry as an actress and filmmaker. Barbra is an amazing talent because she became a legend in two different careers.
Upbringing
Barbra was one of three children. She had an older brother, Sheldon and a half sister, Roslyn born from her mother’s second marriage.
Entertainment Career
Streisand began singing in nightclubs as a teenager and then moved onto acting in films and later to Broadway. Her first television appearance was in 1961 on The Tonight Show. Also that same year, she had some controversial appearances on TV. She was pinned as being very self absorbed.
In the early sixties, she did a few Broadway appearance and won accolades for Funny Girl and many other shows.
Her career as a singer brought on the recording of 50 albums, including the single The Way We Were in 1970 which followed the movie in 1973, starring Robert Redford. She has performed duets with Donna Summers, Barry Gibbs and Elvis Presley. Her amazing portfolio includes Oscars, Grammys, Tonys, Emmys, People’s Choices, Golden Globes and BAFTA Awards from 1976 and on. There’s not many people history that can touch what she’s been able to achieve in her career.
Close Relationships
Her first marriage was to Elliot Gould; an accomplished actor in his own right. In 1962, while, on Broadway, Gould got Streisand to co-star with him in I Can Get it for You Wholesale. They developed a courtship while working together on set.
Gould moved in with Streisand and they were married by 1963. Barbra seemed to still be supporting Gould as she was gaining fame and he was struggling to get roles. By 1966, they were proud parents of their son, Jason. Carrying the fame of his wife, Gould struggled with the shame of not carrying his weight which created tension in the marriage. The couple separated in 1969, only six years after they tied the knot.
Luckily for Gould, the separation was what he needed to get motivated. He rose to go onto very popular TV shows and movies. They mutually agreed that they were better off away from each other and they permanently ended the relationship in divorce in 1971.
