Patrick James "Pat" Cummins was born on May 8, 1993, in Westmead, Sydney, Australia. He is the son of James Cummins and was raised in Mount Riverview in the Blue Mountains region. Raised in a religious household, Pat grew up with two brothers and two sisters. He attended St Paul's Grammar School, after which he enrolled at the University of Technology Sydney, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business. As part of his university journey, he was also a scholar in the Elite Athlete Program. Pat developed a passion for cricket from a young age and idolized Australian fast bowler Brett Lee. Remarkably, he later had the opportunity to play alongside Lee in domestic cricket.
Pat Cummins is widely recognized for his exceptional fast bowling skills, regularly delivering speeds exceeding 145 km/h. His early cricket journey began at Glenbrook Blaxland Cricket Club. He later played first-grade cricket for Penrith in 2010. His breakthrough came in 2011 during the preliminary final of the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash against Tasmania, where his performance earned him the Man of the Match title. That same year, he joined the Sydney Sixers in the inaugural Big Bash League season.
In 2012, Cummins signed with the Perth Scorchers for the Big Bash League; however, he missed the season due to a significant injury. Following his recovery, he resumed playing professionally in 2014 with the Scorchers. During the same year, he was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), marking his entry into international franchise leagues.
Pat Cummins made his Test debut for Australia on November 17, 2011, against South Africa, at just 18 years old. It was only his fourth first-class match. In that series, he made an immediate impact by scoring 13 runs in the second innings and taking seven wickets, which led to his being named Man of the Match. His debut performance also made him the second-youngest Australian to play in a Test match since the 1950s.
In the same year, he debuted in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), also against South Africa. Cummins quickly established his reputation as one of Australia's most promising fast bowlers. His early success earned him a central contract with Cricket Australia and a place in the provisional national side for the ICC Under-19 World Cup. Unfortunately, a stress fracture in his back sidelined him for over six months shortly afterward.
