Early Life and Background

Perry Farrell, born Peretz Bernstein in 1959, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He was born on Long Island, New York, and later moved to Florida during his teenage years with his Jewish family. His father worked as a jeweler, while his mother was an artist who tragically died by suicide when Farrell was only three years old. This profound loss became a recurring theme in his work, notably referenced in Jane’s Addiction’s song "Then She Did" and other personal reflections in his lyrics.

Musical Influences and Early Career

Farrell’s musical influences include a diverse array of legendary artists such as James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles. He later became inspired by figures like Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie. After graduating high school, he relocated to California, embracing the surfer lifestyle. During this time, he supported himself by waiting tables and working on construction sites, often living out of his car. Farrell traveled to several premier surfing locations around the world, including Bali.

Jane’s Addiction and Lollapalooza

Perry Farrell rose to prominence as the frontman of the influential alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction. In 1991, he created the first Lollapalooza festival as a farewell tour for the band. Unexpectedly successful, the event evolved into an annual touring festival and later, a staple destination festival based in Chicago. Farrell has continued to co-produce Lollapalooza alongside partners including C3 Presents and William Morris Endeavor.

Beyond Jane’s Addiction, Farrell was also the driving force behind alternative rock groups such as Porno for Pyros and Satellite Party. Over the years, he has performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival multiple times, appearing under various aliases including DJ Peretz, Hybrid, and Satellite Party, as well as performing under his own name and with Jane’s Addiction.
