Peta Murgatroyd is a professional Latin dancer, born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1986. Although born in New Zealand, she moved to Australia with her family when she was just 18 months old and was raised in Perth, Western Australia. As a result, Murgatroyd identifies as Australian and holds Australian citizenship.
She began her dance training in classical ballet at the age of four. For 12 years, she studied under Madame Lubov Nikonorenko, a former principal dancer of the Kirov Ballet. However, at the age of 16, a severe ankle injury forced her to give up ballet. Following this setback, she transitioned to studying Latin dance, where she quickly excelled.
Within months of beginning ballroom training, Murgatroyd’s talent became evident. She won the title of Western Australia Amateur Latin State Champion in 2002, and again in 2003. Her achievements continued at the international level, where she placed second in the Great World City Championships.
She was also a semi-finalist in the Lion City Championships in Singapore and a finalist at the Australian Open Championships. In 2005, she earned third place in the Under-21 category at the prestigious Blackpool Dance Festival, widely recognized as one of the most significant competitions in the world of ballroom dance.
Murgatroyd joined the touring dance production Burn the Floor in 2004. Over the next six years, she traveled extensively with the group, performing around the globe. When the show made its debut on Broadway, she was cast as the lead female dancer, a role that highlighted her technical skill and stage presence.
