Philip Douglas Jackson is a former American professional basketball player who was born on September 17, 1945 in Deer Lodge, Montana to his parents Charles and Elisabeth Funk Jackson. Both of his parents were Assemblies of God ministers who were very involved in the church. His father even preached on Sunday mornings and his mother did the same in the evenings. Jackson has two brothers and a half-sister who grew up together in a remote area of Montana. They were raised in a strict religious household with no television or dancing allowed. In fact, Jackson wouldn't even see his first movie until he was a senior in high school.
He attended high school in Williston, North Dakota and played on the school's varsity basketball team which led to the team earning two state titles. Jackson was also active in other sports including football and baseball as well as other track and field competitions. He was eventually recruited by the University of North Dakota where he became a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. In 1967, Jackson was drafted into the New York Knicks and he eventually became a fan favorite and one of NBA's best substitutes. Despite his high skill, he had very little actual playing time as a substitute. Jackson went on to become a coach throughout the 1980s and eventually was granted a role as an executive in the National Basketball Association.
