Early Life and Education

Rachel Susan Dratch was born in Lexington, Massachusetts, to Elaine Ruth, a transportation director, and Paul Dratch, a radiologist. From a young age, she showed a passion for performance, frequently participating in school plays. She later attended Dartmouth College, where she further explored her interest in comedy and acting. After graduating, Dratch moved to Chicago to study improvisational theatre, immersing herself in the city’s vibrant comedy scene.

Beginnings in Comedy and Improv

While in Chicago, Dratch became a key member of the improvisational comedy group “Said and Done.” She gained prominence performing with The Second City, one of the nation’s premier comedy institutions. Her talent was quickly recognized, and she received the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Actress for her work with The Second City.

Saturday Night Live and Television Career

Dratch’s breakthrough came when she joined the cast of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) in 1999. Known for her quirky characters and comedic timing, she remained with the show until 2006. During and after her time on SNL, Dratch appeared in various television series, including NBC productions like “Third Watch” and popular sitcoms such as “The King of Queens,” “Monk,” “30 Rock,” and “Ugly Betty.”

Film Roles and Popular Works

In addition to her television work, Dratch has appeared in several films. Some of her notable movie roles include “Martin & Orloff,” “The Hebrew Hammer,” “Down with Love,” and “My Life in Ruins.” She also starred in the critically acclaimed stage show “Dratch & Fey,” a collaboration with fellow SNL alum Tina Fey, which earned praise for its wit and chemistry.
