He is the younger of two children born to John Armitage, an engineer, and Margaret Armitage, who worked as a secretary. He has one elder brother named Chris.

Armitage began his formal education at Huncote Community Primary School and later attended Brockington College. During his school years, he developed an interest in music and began learning various instruments, actively participating in musical events and performances. He pursued his passion for the performing arts further at Pattison College in Coventry, where he studied drama, dance, and music, with aspirations to build a career in musical theatre. While at college, he took part in numerous stage productions that helped him build confidence and early recognition for his performances.
Career Beginnings in Theatre and Acting
Following his graduation, Armitage joined a musical theatre to pursue his interest in performing arts. Although he began with musical productions, he eventually shifted his focus to acting. Seeking formal training, he enrolled in the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), where he honed his skills in classical acting.
After completing his training, Armitage began securing small roles in television and film. His persistent efforts paid off when he landed a breakout role in the BBC television drama North & South in 2004. His portrayal of John Thornton received critical acclaim and marked a turning point in his career.
