Samuel Heath Jaeger was born on January 29, 1977, in Perrysburg, Ohio, to parents Charles Jaeger and LeAnne Jaeger. He was raised in Perrysburg, spending most of his childhood in the town. His father is of German, English, and Scots-Irish descent, while his mother is of German heritage. He has a brother named David Jaeger.
Jaeger attended Perrysburg High School, graduating in 1995. He later enrolled at Otterbein College, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1999. His passion for acting was evident from a young age and continued to develop throughout his college years.
While still in college, Jaeger made his acting debut with a small role on the television series Law & Order. After graduation, he moved to New York City, where he worked at a casting office and performed in several theater productions. He later relocated to Los Angeles to further pursue a career in film and television.
Jaeger's television breakthrough came in 2000 when he appeared as Bill Kelley in an episode of The West Wing. He gained wider recognition for his recurring role as Matt Dowd in the legal dramedy Eli Stone (2008–2009), and later for his portrayal of Joel Graham in NBC’s family drama Parenthood (2010–2015).
Throughout his career, Jaeger has guest-starred in numerous television shows, including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2003) as Kevin the Bellman, Scrubs (2003) as Steve Larkin, NYPD Blue (2004) as Kamal Muhammad, Commander in Chief (2006) as Vince’s Partner, and Friday Night Lights (2009) as Doug.
