In addition to his interest in acting, Sam was also musically inclined, serving as the lead vocalist of a band called Love Plumber during his high school years.

Sam Witwer began his acting career with a commercial for the Chicago Bulls. He soon transitioned to television, landing voice roles on the medical drama ER. In 2001, he appeared on the legal drama JAG as Beasley. He gained wider recognition in 2004 for his portrayal of Lt. Crashdown in the acclaimed science fiction series Battlestar Galactica. His role as Neil Perry in the 2006 season of Dexter further established his reputation as a versatile actor.

In 2011, Witwer starred as Aidan Waite, a vampire struggling to live among humans, in the supernatural drama Being Human—a role that became one of his most iconic. His television credits are extensive and include appearances in Arli$$ (2001) as a mourner, Dark Angel (2002) as Marrow, Star Trek: Enterprise (2003) as Sloth #3, NCIS (2004) as Staff Sgt. Rafael, Bones (2006) as Mitchell Downs, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2007) as Officer Casella, Smallville (2008–2009) as Davis Bloome, The Walking Dead (2010) as a tank soldier, Grimm (2014) as Max Robbins, and Once Upon a Time (2016) as Mr. Hyde.
