Formation of Pentatonix
While attending USC, Hoying sought to audition for the third season of the NBC a cappella competition show, The Sing-Off. To form a group, he invited his longtime friends Mitch Grassi and Kirstin Maldonado to join him. They later recruited Avi Kaplan as the bass vocalist and Kevin Olusola for percussion. The group named themselves Pentatonix, a name inspired by the pentatonic scale, which consists of five notes per octave, mirroring the five members of the group.
Success on The Sing-Off and Rise to Fame
Pentatonix competed in and won the third season of The Sing-Off in 2011. As winners, they received a $200,000 prize and a recording contract with Sony Music. Their innovative arrangements and vocal techniques quickly gained attention, propelling them into mainstream success.
Grammy Awards and Achievements
Following their win, Pentatonix built a significant fanbase through YouTube and a series of successful albums and tours. The group has won multiple Grammy Awards, including two in the category of Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella — in 2015 for their arrangement of “Daft Punk” and in 2016 for “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy."
YouTube Ventures and Superfruit
In addition to his work with Pentatonix, Scott Hoying also co-created a YouTube vlogging and musical duo channel called Superfruit with Mitch Grassi. Launched in 2013, the channel features a mix of comedic content and music performances and has amassed over a million subscribers. Superfruit became a creative outlet for Hoying and Grassi outside of their Pentatonix work, allowing them to explore new musical styles and connect with fans on a personal level.
