Scott Hoying is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist who was born on September 17, 1991, in San Antonio, Texas. Hoying attended Martin High School in Arlington, Texas and graduated in 2010. From there, he went on to attend the University of Southern California. While attending university, Hoying joined the SoCal VoCals, a campus a cappella group. He eventually left the group and set his sights on the third season of "The Sing-Off". To compete in the show, Hoying asked his friends Mitch Grassi and Kirstin Maldonado to audition with him. They also added Avi Kaplan on bass and Kevin Olusola on percussion and named the group Pentatonix. Hoying is the one who came up with the name after the pentatonic scale which features five notes per octave.
The newly formed group went on to win "The Sing-Off" and won $200,000 plus a recording contract with Sony Music. Along with the band Pentatonix, Hoying also helps run a YouTube vlogging channel called "Superfruit" with the help of Grassi. The channel releases new content every Tuesday and has reached over 1 million subscribers. Hoying and the rest of Pentatonix went on to win two Grammys for Best Arrangement, Instrumental Or A Cappella."
