Background and Education

Sergey is a native of Moscow but he came to the United States for his education. He received a bachelor’s degree with honors in mathematics and computer science from the University of Maryland which is located in College Park. After attempting the Ph.D. program in computer science at Stanford University where he received his master's degree, he took a temporary leave to focus on his work.

Sergey is a proud recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship as well as an honorary MBA from the Instituto de Empresa.

Creating Google

At Stanford, he met Larry Page and worked together on the project that became the search engine giant, Google. As a team, they founded Google Inc. in 1998. To this day, Sergey continues to share responsibility for day-to-day operations with his partners, Larry Page and Eric Schmidt.

Sergey's has a wide range of research interests that include search engines, information extraction from unstructured sources, and data mining of large text collections. He has published many academic papers including Extracting Patterns and Relations from the World Wide Web and Dynamic Data Mining: A New Architecture for Data with High Dimensionality.
