In 2011, Shim successfully transitioned into leading roles with the retro dramedy Sunny, which follows the lives of seven women by shifting between their teenage years in the 1980s and their adult lives in the present day. The film was praised for its meticulous period detail, witty dialogue, and strong ensemble cast. Sunny defied industry expectations by proving that female-driven narratives could succeed at the box office, garnering over 7 million admissions. Director Kang Hyeong-cheol described Shim as “already a complete actress.”
Shim continued to showcase her versatility through a variety of roles. She portrayed a girl affected by the Korean War in the dark comedy My Dad Loves Trouble (also known as Kyung-sook, Kyung-sook’s Father), a character with apparent supernatural abilities in the thriller Possessed, a depressive quiz show contestant in The Quiz Show Scandal, and a court food taster in the historical drama Masquerade.
In 2014, Shim starred in the comedy Miss Granny, playing a 70-year-old woman who mysteriously finds herself in a 20-year-old’s body. Reflecting on the role, she said, "This film is especially meaningful to me because it marks my first time playing a lead not as a child actress, but as a full-fledged actress." The film surpassed the box office success of Sunny, with over 8.65 million admissions. For her performance, Shim won Best Actress honors at the Chunsa Film Art Awards, the Baeksang Arts Awards, the Director’s Cut Awards, and the Buil Film Awards.
Shim took on the role of an eccentric classical pianist in Cantabile Tomorrow, the Korean adaptation of the popular Japanese manga Nodame Cantabile. Her upcoming projects include the animated film Seoul Station, directed by Yeon Sang-ho, and the historical romance Marital Harmony, the second installment in the divination-themed trilogy that began with The Face Reader.
