Sid Haig was born in Fresno, California, and raised within the Armenian community. His birth name was Sidney Eddy Mosesian. His father, Haig Mosesian, worked as an electrician. During his early years, Sid experienced rapid growth, which affected his motor coordination. To help with this, he began taking dance lessons. At the age of seven, he was paid to perform as a dancer in a children's Christmas show and later joined a vaudeville revival performance.
Haig displayed strong musical ability from a young age, particularly as a drummer. Recognizing his talent, his parents bought him a drum set, which he used to master various genres including rock and roll, blues, jazz, country, and swing. After high school, he signed a one-year recording contract and, as a teenager, released a single titled "Full House" with the T-Birds. The song achieved regional success, though it did not reach number 4 on the Billboard charts as some sources have inaccurately reported.
While attending high school, Haig was influenced by drama department head Alice Merrill, a former Broadway actress with strong industry connections. In his senior year, Merrill produced a play for which she doubled the cast and invited her friends from Hollywood to evaluate the students’ performances. Haig was chosen for a prominent role and caught the attention of Dennis Morgan, a well-known musical comedy star of the 1940s. Morgan encouraged Haig to pursue acting seriously and to further his education at San Fernando Valley State College.
After two years, Haig enrolled in the Pasadena Playhouse, a respected school of theatre arts whose alumni include Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, and Robert Preston. This marked the beginning of Haig’s formal training as an actor.
