Born on May 15, 1966, in Trenton, New Jersey, Sommore—whose birth name is Lori Ann Rambough—was raised primarily by her mother following her parents' divorce. She attended Our Lady of the Divine Shepherd and The Pennington School before graduating from McCorristin Catholic High School (now Trenton Catholic Academy) in 1985. She later earned a degree in business administration from Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia, a campus known for being featured in films such as Drumline and Stomp the Yard.
Though she has no full siblings, Sommore is the half-sister of actress Nia Long; the two share a father but have not collaborated professionally.
Sommore initially pursued a career outside entertainment, working in retail and later as an employment counselor for three years. Her trajectory shifted after attending comedy shows in Atlanta, which inspired her to explore stand-up. In 1994, she made her professional debut as the first-ever female host of BET’s ComicView. She appeared on the TV show Snaps the following year and gained wider recognition with her guest appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2000.
Over the years, Sommore has been featured on several prominent television programs including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The View, and Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. Her television credits also include notable roles and appearances in Def Comedy Jam (1995), The Hughleys (1998), BET Live from L.A. (1999), The Amanda Lewis Show (2001), The Parkers (2002), Comedy Unleashed (2007), Celebrity Fit Club (2008), Just for Laughs: All-Access, Hit the Floor, and Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta (2014).
She continues to tour actively, performing in events such as the Festival of Laughs and the Capital Comedy Festival, remaining professionally active well beyond the age of 50.
Sommore made her film debut in 2001 in The Queens of Comedy, appearing alongside Mo'Nique, Laura Hayes, and Adele Givens. The acclaimed special was filmed during their nationwide tour and aired on Showtime before a DVD release. She gained further recognition for her roles as Cookie in Friday After Next (2002), Stephanie in A Miami Tail (2003), Cherry in Soul Plane (2004), and Abby in Dirty Laundry (2006).
Additional film credits include appearances in Blunts & Stunts: Class of ’94 and Something New (2006). Her television film work includes Bitch House (1995), Sommore: The Queen Stands Alone (2007), Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav (2007), Sommore: Chandelier Status (2013), and Sommore: Fun Non Amously Famous (2015).
Beyond performing, Sommore has built a profile as a writer and producer. She created and produced The Queen Stands Alone, a filmed version of her stand-up act that premiered on Comedy Central to over 800,000 viewers in 2008. The DVD remains a strong seller among stand-up comedy recordings.
She is also considered an entrepreneur, expanding her brand through live tours, merchandising, and media appearances.
