Stephen A Smith

Most of the television audience just see Stephen as a loud and obnoxious talking head but are not aware that he had to work hard to get to his current spot. Stephen first got his big entry with the Wake Forest College Soccer team. John Gates was Stephen’s professor at Winston-Salem college. Talking about his beloved professor, Stephen remembers: “He taught critical and persuasive writing, and he read an essay of mine and told me I was a born sportswriter. He said, “I want to take you out to lunch next week,” and I said, “OK, fine.” Come to find out, I had no idea, lunch was with the sports editor of the Winston-Salem Journal (Terry Oberle) and it was in his office and there was no food there. I was just going to meet him, and five minutes later, he hired me on the spot as a clerk in the sports department.”

Stephen explained how he started to cover the Wake Forest Soccer Team, “Approximately three weeks later, he sent me out on an assignment to do a story on Wake Forest soccer, which was ranked No. 3 in the country. I had never covered soccer in my life.”

Stephen’s father retired very early due to Arthritis. His medical condition resulted in his wife taking care of the house. She was a registered nurse and she showed Stephen the lessons and merits of hard work. Stephen’s mother had other plans for him and did not envision him to become a sports journalist. She wanted him to be a lawyer, predominantly due to his ability to effective argue. Stephen’s ability to win arguments and disputes became second nature. Even if most of it was due to his arrogance, Stephen’s mother felt that he had all the traits of a successful lawyer.

Instead of pursuing a path to the court room, Stephen brought his banter to the sports world. Even the casual sports fan knows who he is because he covers many sports. He comments on all the major sports including fringe sports like boxing and mixed martial arts. People recognize him because of his loud voice and brash attitude. He will often try to win debates against other people by just screaming and being louder than them.

He was recently put under fire for suggesting that star basketball player wanted to leave a well-respected franchise. The public said he was making things up for ratings and attention. A few months later, it was confirmed that Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs wanted to leave the team. He was upset with how the team doctors handled his injury. He felt that they put his career at risk which would have ruined his chance at a big contract. Stephen had reported this information months before but no one believed him because of his personality.

Stephen has a net worth of 2 million dollars and an annual salary of 400 thousand dollars, according to financial publications. He has made most of his income from his work in sports media.
