Stephen Root

Background and Early Life

Stephen Root was born on November 17, 1951, in Sarasota, Florida, to Leona Estelle and Rolland Clair Root. His father worked as a project director and site supervisor on large-scale building projects across the United States and Mexico. Due to his father’s profession, Root’s family moved frequently, and he was often referred to as an "army brat," although his father was not in the military. Root attended Vero Beach High School in Vero Beach, Florida.

Breakthrough Roles and Career Highlights

Root gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Jimmy James, a quirky media mogul, on the NBC sitcom NewsRadio. He further cemented his place in pop culture with his role as Milton Waddams in the 1999 film Office Space, a character whose mumbling frustration and attachment to a red stapler became iconic. Root also starred as Gordon Pibb, an earnest gym member, in the sports comedy Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.

He became a staple in television with a recurring role in the final two seasons of The West Wing as Bob Mayer, a Republican campaign strategist. Root is also noted for frequently collaborating with director Mike Judge, appearing in films like Idiocracy and series like King of the Hill, where he voiced the characters of Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland.

A favorite of the Coen Brothers, Root has performed in several of their films including O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Ladykillers, No Country for Old Men, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. He also portrayed NASA flight director Chris Kraft in the critically acclaimed HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon.
