Steve Hartman, born on April 14, 1963, in Toledo, Ohio, is an American journalist and broadcaster known for his distinctive storytelling style. He graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1985 with a degree in broadcast journalism. During his senior year, Hartman gained early experience in the industry while working as an intern and general assignment reporter at WTOL in his hometown of Toledo.
Following his initial work in Ohio, Hartman advanced his career by joining KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, where he worked from 1987 to 1991. He later moved to New York City, working for WABC-TV in 1991, before relocating to the West Coast in 1994 to join KCBS-TV in Los Angeles. Over the years, his on-air style and skill in telling human-interest stories gained him national recognition.
Hartman’s most notable project began with a feature series he developed called "Everybody Has a Story." This concept was inspired by David Johnson, a journalist from the Lewiston Morning Tribune in Idaho. In the early version of the segment, originally showcased on the program Public Eye, Hartman would throw a dart at a map of the United States and travel to the randomly selected location. Once there, he opened a phone book, picked a name at random, and profiled the individual he found—revealing the extraordinary in everyday life.
