He graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1985 with a degree in broadcast journalism. During his senior year, Hartman gained early experience in the industry while working as an intern and general assignment reporter at WTOL in his hometown of Toledo.
Following his initial work in Ohio, Hartman advanced his career by joining KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, where he worked from 1987 to 1991. He later moved to New York City, working for WABC-TV in 1991, before relocating to the West Coast in 1994 to join KCBS-TV in Los Angeles.
