Steve Janowitz is a retired school teacher who is married to comedian Joy Behar; Janowitz and Behar were together nearly thirty years before they got married. Although Joy Behar has lots of jokes at the ready when asked why she waited so long to get married i.e. I got tired of asking for senior discounts for my “boyfriend”, I got tired of my family referring to him as “the old guy”, I wanted to wait until his parents were dead because I didn’t want in-laws, etc., the real reason is more heartwarming than her well timed humor.
Joy had a friend who was in a gay marriage and lost her partner. While in the hospital the woman had to tell the nursing staff that she was the woman’s sister so that she could be with her partner. Joy said it made her sad to think of having to deal with something like that and that she did not want that to happen to her and Steve. Steve Janowitz and Joy Behar were married in a private ceremony on August 11, 2011 after “dating” for twenty nine years. The couple lives in a sixth-floor, fourteen hundred square foot apartment in New York’s Upper West Side.
