Acting Beyond Sitcoms

In addition to her music ventures, Ali continued acting in both television and film. She appeared in projects directed by acclaimed filmmakers such as Takeshi Kitano (Brother) and Rodrigo García (Mother and Child). In 2005, she completed work on the sports drama Glory Road. That same year, she appeared in the music video for “Can I Live?” by Nick Cannon and Anthony Hamilton, playing the role of Cannon’s mother.

Ali also participated in the “Yes We Can” music video by will.i.am in early 2008, a campaign anthem supporting Barack Obama’s presidential bid. The video gained coverage on major news outlets, including ABC's “What the Buzz” segment on World News Now.

Recurring Television Roles and Recognitions

Ali performed the title track “Sunny Valentine” for the independent film Rockin’ Meera in 2005. She later joined the cast of the CBS daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless, portraying the character Roxanne in a recurring role. Additional film credits include starring in Nora’s Hair Salon and its sequel, Nora’s Hair Salon 2: A Cut Above.

In 2011, she was honored with the Living Legacy Award by the Caribbean Heritage Organization in Los Angeles for her contributions to entertainment and culture. The following year, she made a guest appearance on The Eric Andre Show. In January 2013, she began starring as Maya in the BET comedy series Second Generation Wayans, alongside Damien Dante Wayans and Craig Wayans.

In 2014, Ali released a new EP titled Hello. The lead single, “Wait For It,” was promoted with a performance on The Arsenio Hall Show. The EP marked her continued interest and talent in the music industry, blending her roots in R&B with modern production.

Ali is a graduate of Harvard University, where she earned her degree in Afro-American Studies and Government in 2002. She has been active in political advocacy, traveling across the United States to promote voter registration during Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. She continued her support during the 2012 reelection campaign, emphasizing civic engagement among young voters.

Ali was in a long-term relationship with actor Jonathan Brandis, which lasted for nearly six years. While largely private about her personal affairs, she remains active in entertainment and social advocacy.
