Tom Ellis is a Welsh actor who was born on November 17, 1978, in Cardiff, in the United Kingdom to his parents Marilyn Jean Hooper and Christopher John Ellis. Several of his family members are Baptist ministers including his father and sister. His uncle is also principal of Regent's Park College, Oxford. He attended High Storrs School in Sheffield and played the French horn in the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra. Ellis continued his education at the Royal Conservatoire of Scottland where he graduated with a BA in Dramatic Studies. Ellis went on to play Gary Preston on the BBC television series "Miranda". He also played Jystyn in the Channel 4 television series "No Angles" and Thomas Milligan in the BBC One television series "Doctor Who". Ellis's next role was as Detective Inspector Bland in "Agatha Christie's Poirot".

In 2009, Ellis appeared as Fay Ripley in the ITV made-for-television drama "Monday Monday". He went on to star in his own USA television series "Rush" where he played a physician in Hollywood. In 2005, Ellis had a daughter with his ex-girlfriend Estelle Morgan. Ellis went on to marry actress Tamzin Outhwaite in 2006 but the pair divorced in 2014 after the birth of his second daughter, this time with Outhwaite.
