Tom Ellis is a Welsh actor born on November 17, 1978, in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom. He was raised in a religious household; his father, Christopher John Ellis, and one of his sisters are Baptist ministers. His mother is Marilyn Jean Hooper. Additionally, his uncle served as principal of Regent’s Park College, Oxford, an institution closely tied to theological education.
Ellis spent much of his childhood in Sheffield, England, where he attended High Storrs School. During his school years, he was musically inclined and played the French horn in the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra. He later pursued acting and enrolled at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly known as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama), graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Studies.
