He was then asked about his second appearance and commented: “For some reason, they got suicidal and brought me back for the nighttime show, which meant that you got a much better date, both in the quality of the person on the other side of the stage and where you got to go. So I, uh, didn’t get that one, either. And I wasn’t any funnier! [Laughs.] I was just scared! Not a good start. But I’d never thought of acting when I was growing up, and I still hadn’t thought of acting even at that point.”
What seems to be quite interesting about the whole Selleck family is their bloodline. Tom – as well as his siblings – is 2 parts English and one part German. From his father’s side he is also a direct descendant of the famous English colonist Davis Selleck.
Former Thomas Magnum spent quite a few years with little or no recognition despite small roles in movies such as Coma and Myra Breckinridge and even a repeated role as private investigator Lance White in The Rockford Files. He also appeared in other T.V. shows, the most notable being The Young and the Restless and Charlie’s Angels.
Selleck’s big break came in 1980 when he was selected for the lead role in the series ‘Magnum P.I. ‘ Because he was locked in for the series, he was unable to accept the lead role in Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark, a role that then famously went to Harrison Ford. The irony was that there was a writer’s strike for six months due to which the work on Magnum P.I. was delayed and Selleck could have done the Indiana Jones movie.
Magnum P.I. turned Selleck’s career around. The show went on for eight seasons and he won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for it. Fans even wanted him to appear as the titular character in the later Magnum P.I. movie. The show was set in Hawaii and was so popular that the Ferrari that Thomas Magnum uses in the series is still referred to as the “Magnum” Ferrari. Other trademarks included a Hawaiian aloha shirt and a Detroit Tigers cap.
