His mother was a bookkeeper, and his father worked as a trash collector. Raised in a working-class family, Danza attended the University of Dubuque in Iowa on a wrestling scholarship and earned a bachelor's degree in history education.
Before achieving fame as an actor, Tony Danza pursued a brief career as a professional boxer under the nickname "Dangerous" Tony Danza. Competing as a middleweight, he fought in the New York Golden Gloves in 1975. He compiled an impressive record of 9 wins and 3 losses, with all nine victories coming by knockout—seven of them in the first round.
Tony Danza gained widespread popularity for his roles on the hit television series Taxi (1978–1983), where he played Tony Banta, and Who’s the Boss? (1984–1992), portraying Tony Micelli.
