Jane Hawking is an English author and teacher who was married to the famous physicist Stephen Hawking for thirty years. Steven Hawking was an English theoretical physicist, and author whose book, A Brief History of Time, appeared on the British Sunday Times best-seller list for two hundred thirty seven weeks. Stephen Hawking had a rare early-onset slow-progressing form of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, that gradually paralyzed him. Jane Hawking was born on March 29, 1944, in Hertfordshire, England. Jane studied languages at the University of London’s Westfield College where she met Steven Hawking at a party held by mutual friends.
The couple became engaged in 1964 and were married in St. Albans in 1965. They had three children: Robert, born in 1967, Lucy, born in 1970, and Timothy, born in 1979. During her marriage to Stephen Hawking, Jane struggled with the progression of his illness, and suffered from depression as the result of being his primary caregiver. Jane Hawking wrote an autobiography of her marriage called Music to Move the Stars: A Life with Stephen, which was subsequently made into an award winning film, entitled The Theory of Everything. Jane Hawking was portrayed by Felicity Jones in the film and she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her work.
