Tony Dorsett

Tony Dorsett is known as a former American football running back for the National Football League. He is most famous for his role as a great player for the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos.

Background

Anthony Drew "Tony" Dorsett was born on April 7, 1954 in Rochester, PA. He grew up playing football and basketball at Hopewell High School as a young man. When he was a sophomore student in 1970, he started at the cornerback position. At 147 pounds, his coaches felt that he wasn't big enough to play running back because the other students were much larger.

He would prove his doubters wrong In 1971 when he played running back and rushed for 1,034 yards. He was named all-state and he set a single-game rushing record with 247 yards in 1972.

Career

When he was in college, Tony won the Heisman Trophy at the University of Pittsburgh. After graduation, he was selected in the first round of the 1977 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys. Being the second overall pick was a huge honor for him and he wanted to prove that he could be an elite player in the league. He was coming in as an elite prospect and he wanted to meet everyone’s expectations.
