The blind date

When she speaks about her husband, she admits that she met him on a blind date in 1996, a first for both of them. She confesses she was in a bad state of mind, after recently ending a 7-year relationship. A mutual friend fixed the two of them up together.  In 1999, after four years of dating, Jon proposed to Tracey via a crossword puzzle created especially for Jon by Will Shortz, The New York Times’ crossword editor.  Shortz included marriage proposal clues in the puzzle, all of which had special meaning to Stewart and McShane. They announced their engagement on July 30, 1999 and in November of 2000 they were married.

Tracey confesses while discussing her blind date / future boyfriend with her roommate, she admitted she would like to be as funny as Jon Stewart. Little did she know she would become his girlfriend, and later, his wife. They have two children, Nathan Thomas Stewart, born in 2004, and Maggie Rose Stewart who came into the world in 2006.

Raising kids

When it came to raising children, she admits the reality is far from how they had imagined it would be. They pictured a perfect life, including what they will and will not do. Naturally, that all changed after the babies were born. Tracey relates she is grateful to those who invented smartphone baby apps and cartoon DVDs.

The couple lives in Tribeca, Lower Manhattan, New York City. In 2005, they purchased a 6000 square-foot duplex penthouse.  In 2013, Jon and Tracey bought a 12-acre (4.9 ha) farm in Middletown, New Jersey, called "Bufflehead Farm". The Stewarts use it as a sanctuary for abused animals. In 2015 Stewart started a vegetarian diet out of ethical reasons; his wife is a long-time vegan.

After Jon Stewart left the Daily Show, he said that he wanted to spend more time with his family, since his schedule permitted too little time for his children. For him, a perfect night is dinner with his family, watching a movie or doing a crossword puzzle with his wife. He admits he needs more time with his family, to do ordinary stuff, like playing with their dog for fun.

Tracey McShane’s work

Tracey is a longtime animal advocate and former veterinary technician and now, author.  The book, Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better, published in October 2015, was presented by her husband Jon Stewart on his show. He couldn’t help but make fun on himself in describing his wife’s book, saying "It’s incredible. I’m so proud of her. Listen, I’ve always known my wife is a kinder and nicer person than I am. But to know that she is funnier and a better writer — I’m not going to lie to you — stings a little bit.."   Tracey donates a portion of the book proceeds to the Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, New York. The Santuary, as a thank you to Jon and Tracey for their support, named two rescued sheep after Jon and Tracey.

Tracey relates she feels she is blessed with a wonderful family and wishes for nothing more. She greatly values her family: her wonderful husband who loves her and their two beautiful children. Tracey is happy about how things have worked out, especially since it all began with a blind date. Her net worth is unknown to the public.
