In 2000, McGrady signed a six-year, $67.5 million contract with the Orlando Magic. The move elevated his career, as he quickly became one of the league’s elite scorers. In the 2000–01 season, he earned his first NBA All-Star selection and was later awarded the NBA’s Most Improved Player. His scoring averages soared, earning him recognition on the All-NBA First Team multiple times.
During the 2002–03 season, McGrady led the league in scoring with an average of 32.1 points per game. Despite his stellar individual performances, the Magic struggled in the playoffs. In 2003, they were eliminated in the first round after a seven-game series loss—despite having held a 3–1 lead.
By the 2003–04 season, internal conflicts and injuries hampered the team's success. Head coach Doc Rivers was fired mid-season, and relations between McGrady and General Manager John Weisbrod reportedly deteriorated. Although McGrady continued to produce high-scoring performances, change became inevitable.
In 2004, McGrady was traded to the Houston Rockets along with several other players. He continued to perform at a high level, including memorable playoff performances, despite ongoing injuries. From 2004 to 2008, he was a perennial All-Star and remained a central figure in Houston’s lineup.
However, persistent injuries in the later stages of his Rockets tenure limited his playing time. During the 2009–10 season, he played just six games. In 2010, McGrady was traded to the New York Knicks for a short stint, followed by brief periods with the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks before joining the San Antonio Spurs during their 2013 playoff run.
