Career as a Carpenter and a TV host
Ty worked as a carpenter in the film industry, and was a set designer for the movie Leaving Las Vegas. He first achieved fame as a skillful and creative carpenter on TLC’s show Trading Spaces. His creativity, out of the box thinking, and on-screen persona paved the way for a string of his own television shows that followed. Apart from reality TV, he has also acted in a few feature films and appeared in a Cyndi Thomson music video.
His biggest television break came when ABC chose him to lead a home design team for their new show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The show was a spectacular hit and turned Ty into a TV star. Building on Ty's popularity and talent in design, the show focused on rebuilding and redesigning homes for certain families within one week. By the end of the show in 2012, Ty and company had rebuilt more than 200 homes.
The success of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition resulted in a British spin off called Ty’s Great British Adventure, which aired in September, 2008. Following these shows,Ty was cast to host the short-lived talk show The Revolution on ABC and later as host of TNT's cooking competition show On The Menu.
In 2016, Ty Pennington teamed up with Amanda Freitag to host a new show providing redesign "makeovers" to diners around the country in need of refurbishing, named American Diner Revival.
Also September 13, 2017, it was announced that Ty Pennington had signed on to join his former cast mates for the reboot of Trading Spaces, which is scheduled to begin airing on TLC in 2018. The former cast mates that will join him in this reboot are, Genevieve Gorder, Hildi Santo-Thomas, Doug Wilson, Carter Oosterhouse and Vern Yip are coming back for the show’s 2018 return. The show has been off the air for over 10 years, but because of popular demand, it's coming back!
Other Ventures
Pennington has partnered with Sears to produce a line of furnishings, bath accessories, home decor, bedding and miscellaneous decor items. He is involved deeply with the design, marketing and PR for Sears.
In 2003, Ty penned down his design tips and tricks to guide homemakers with his first book, Ty's Tricks: Home Repair Secrets Plus Cheap and Easy Projects to Transform Any Room. In 2008, he published another book, Good Design Can Change Your Life: Beautiful Rooms, Inspiring Stories. Pennington also publishes his own quarterly magazine, Ty Pennington at Home.

Pennington is a philanthropist in real life, and has a net worth of approximately $10 million. He and his partner Andrea Bock have been together since 2004.
