Vic Mensa, born Victor Kwesi Mensah on June 6, 1993, in Chicago, Illinois, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter of Ghanaian and European descent. He grew up in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago and attended Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. It was during his time there that he met fellow Chicago artist Chancelor Bennett, better known as Chance the Rapper, a relationship that would prove significant in both of their musical careers.
Mensa began his music career in 2009 as a founding member of the band Kids These Days. The group blended genres such as hip-hop, rock, and jazz, and gained a reputation in the Chicago music scene. They released their debut EP, Hard Times, in 2011, followed by a full-length mixtape titled Traphouse Rock in 2012. Although the group disbanded in 2013, it served as a launching pad for Mensa’s solo career.
In 2014, Vic Mensa gained wider recognition after touring Europe with rapper Danny Brown. That same year, he was featured on the cover of XXL magazine as part of the prestigious Freshman Class of 2014, highlighting emerging artists in hip-hop. On June 6, 2014, he released his debut solo single and music video, Down on My Luck, in collaboration with Virgin EMI Records. The track showcased his versatility and helped expand his international reach.
