Walter Mazzarri began his professional football career as a midfielder. He started at Fiorentina in 1981 and later played for clubs including Pescara and Empoli. His playing career also included stints in Serie B with teams such as Acireale. He played professionally until 1995, accumulating a total of 244 appearances and scoring 13 goals throughout his career.
Following his retirement as a player, Mazzarri transitioned into coaching. Before assuming head coaching roles, he held various support staff positions such as opposition scout, goalkeeping coach, chief scout, assistant coach, and first team coach. His official coaching career began in 1998.
Mazzarri's first breakthrough came in 2001 when he managed Sicilian side Acireale. From 2004 to 2007, he managed Reggina, helping the club stay in Serie A despite challenging circumstances. In 2007, he was appointed head coach of Sampdoria, where he led the team to a Coppa Italia runner-up finish in 2008.
In 2009, Mazzarri took over as head coach of Napoli, where he achieved notable success, guiding the club to a Coppa Italia title in 2012. His accomplishments at Napoli earned him the Enzo Bearzot Award in 2012. After leaving Napoli in 2013, he managed Inter Milan until 2014. In 2016, he signed with Watford in the English Premier League.
Throughout his managerial career, Mazzarri has maintained a win percentage of approximately 39.73%. He is recognized for his tactical acumen and ability to strengthen teams under pressure. Although much of his early coaching career details remain private, his achievements with clubs like Sampdoria and Napoli have solidified his reputation in European football.
