Raised by his grandmother and aunt because his military father didn't want to raise him as a military-brat, Wayne career started in 1986 as a community theater actor. At the same time, he also started performing at the Orlando Imrpov troupe SAK Comedy Lab.

The first adaptation (musical) of the 2005 movie Kinky Boots was written by Tony Award winning writer Harvey Fierstein and openly gay theatre director Jerry Mitchell. In 2013, the first adaptation ( Broadway musical) won several awards including 6 Tony awards and various awards.

Anyway, in Kinky Boots, there is a special character called Lola, a drag-queen who helps a bankrupt shoe factory company to revive.

Point on, Wayne Brady will be playing the character of Lola in upcoming Broadway revival of the Kinky Boots (musical), the first adaptation.

The revival is expected to land similar success as the 2013 Kinky Boots (musical). The good news is that the revival will be yet again directed by Jerry Mitchell. And, good news for Wayne is that he will be playing Lola replacing Billy Porter, who won various awards including the 2013 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role of Lola in the first adaptation.

 Well, Billy decision to leave the show surely helped Wayne in landing the role. Plus, he also had good terms with Jerry who he knew from various other projects. Matter of fact, Wayne previously wanted to be part of the first musical adaptation . However, Billy was selected for the role.

However, when Billy left and Kinky Boots team called him, he gave an interesting response.

“I freaked out. They didn’t even finish. ‘Hey Wayne, would you,Kinky—‘ ‘Yes.’ It was immediate.”
