Eckhart had a passion for acting from a young age. His early experience on stage came with a school production titled “Charlie Brown: The Doctor Is In.” Eager to pursue a career in acting, he moved to Australia in his late teens to attend a drama school. However, he left before completing the program and worked various jobs, including as a movie theater usher. He later completed his high school education through correspondence courses.

University Years and Artistic Collaborations

After spending time in both France and Hawaii, Eckhart moved to Utah to attend Brigham Young University. There, he studied film and met playwright and director Neil LaBute. He was cast in one of LaBute’s college productions, forming a partnership that would prove instrumental in his future career. Years later, when LaBute transitioned to filmmaking, the two reunited professionally.

Career Beginnings and Breakthrough Roles

In his early career, Eckhart pursued roles in television, commercials, and independent films. His breakthrough came in 1997 when he starred in LaBute’s film “In the Company of Men,” which showcased his talent and marked his entrance into mainstream cinema. This was followed by a role in “Your Friends and Neighbors” (1998), also directed by LaBute. In 1999, he appeared in Oliver Stone's sports drama “Any Given Sunday,” albeit in a minor role.

The year 2000 was a turning point in Eckhart's career when he landed a prominent role in “Erin Brockovich,” an award-winning film that significantly raised his profile. That same year, he portrayed a morally dubious character in “Nurse Betty,” once again under LaBute’s direction.
