Adam Archuleta was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and grew up in Chandler, Arizona, a suburb in the southeastern region of Phoenix. He attended Chandler High School, where he was a standout on the football team. Archuleta was a two-time First Team All-Central Region selection and earned Honorable Mention All-State honors. His high school football coach was Jerry Loper.
Archuleta played college football at Arizona State University, where he initially joined the team as a walk-on in 1996. He redshirted his first year and then played in every game as a reserve inside linebacker and special teams contributor. During his redshirt freshman season, he recorded 17 solo tackles.
He went on to start for three years at linebacker, becoming one of the team’s most reliable defensive players. Archuleta’s performance and work ethic eventually earned him a scholarship and set the foundation for his professional football career.
Adam Archuleta was selected by the St. Louis Rams with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He spent five seasons with the Rams, where he thrived in Lovie Smith's Cover 2 defensive scheme. During his rookie season, Archuleta was named to the All-Rookie teams by both Football News and Pro Football Weekly. He appeared in 13 games, starting 12 as a strong safety, and was sixth on the team in tackles, finishing the season with 81 total tackles, including 43 solo efforts.
He signed a five-year contract with the Rams worth $7 million, which included a $3 million signing bonus. After his tenure in St. Louis, Archuleta went on to play for the Washington Redskins and the Chicago Bears. He also attended training camp with the Oakland Raiders but did not appear in a regular-season game for the team.
