Background

Adam Dirks was born in Hillsboro, KS. Adam has always had religion in his life and he isn’t just a believer. He is active in the community and tries to give his best effort when it comes to recruiting new people into his religion.

Marriage, Wife and Children

Adam Dirks was 23 years old when he married Bethany Hamilton. The couple first met each other when their eyes locked on a warm beach. The two lovers got married in 2013 in a Christian ceremony. They are both Christians which made things smooth for the couple and their families.

Adam and Bethany gave birth to a baby boy in 2015, two years after they were married. They waited until after they were married because of their Christian values. They named their son Tobias, after Adam’s great grandfather. Bethany continued to surf after the pregnancy while Adam stayed home to take care of their son. Adam enjoyed fatherhood very much and did not mind staying home all day.

Bethany is clearly the breadwinner of the family but Adam has no issues with the untraditional gender role. The two may be traditional when it comes to religion but they have no shame with Adam staying at home. They recognize that Bethany’s surfing career is a top priority and they needed to structure their lives to give her the best chance at succeeding.

Adam Dirks first appeared in the public eye when the married couple competed as a team on the popular television program, The Amazing Race.

Wife's Accident

Adam was an understanding and supportive husband when tragedy struck the couple. Bethany lost her left arm because of a shark attack. Adam encouraged Bethany to keep on surfing and to keep on fighting. She has become the source of inspiration for many people who are disabled. The married couple has been running a trust that helps those who need physical assistance.

Bethany Hamilton wrote about everything that happened during the shark attack in her book called Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family and Fighting to Get Back on The Board. She appeared on many different television shows to tell her story and promote her book. She said that her faith was one of the major reasons she was able to pull through. When she got attacked, she lost over 60 percent of her blood and went into hypovolemic shock. The doctor who was at the hotel helped save her life. She had to recover for a week before she could be released. Bethany went back to surfing within three weeks after the accident.

At the time of the attack, Bethany said she feared for her life and didn’t think she was going to make it. She had been surfing her whole life and had never experienced something like that before. She was always confident and comfortable when she was in the water. She never had the fear of sharks like the average person because she felt in tune with the ocean and felt she was a part of the natural flow. She couldn’t recall what caused the shark to attack.
