In July 2020, Adrian Wojnarowski got some help from the NBA players he covers. Various players got on social media, protesting ESPN's suspension of Adrian and starting the trend #FreeWoj. The issue started when Wojnarowski got a public statement from Missouri's Senator Josh Hawley's office. It itemized Hawley's letter to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, calling the league's arrangements to respect the Black Lives Matter development as unpatriotic.
Wojnarowski reacted to Hawley with the simple "f*ck you." Hawley was quick to share this short correspondence on social media. Wojnarowski, who sent the reaction from his work email account, immediately apologized, with ESPN including an extra comment separating themselves. Before long the correspondent was suspended.
