Early Life and Education

Alexandra Shipp is an American actress, singer, and songwriter born on July 16, 1991, in Phoenix, Arizona. Her mother was a Kundalini yoga instructor, and her father was a musician, creating an artistic and spiritually-inclined household. She grew up with two brothers, James and Jordan, as well as a stepsister named Kasia.

Shipp attended Squaw Peak Elementary School and later enrolled at the Arizona School for the Arts, where she nurtured her interest in performing. She completed her high school education at St. Mary’s Catholic High School before relocating to Los Angeles at the age of 17 to pursue a professional acting career.

Acting Debut and Early Career

Alexandra Shipp made her film debut with a minor role in the family comedy “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” (2009). She gained additional attention in 2013 when she starred as KT Rush in Nickelodeon’s teen mystery series “House of Anubis.”

In 2014, she played Dani Raymond in the VH1 television movie “Drumline: A New Beat,” a sequel to the 2002 hit film “Drumline.” Shipp's portrayal of real-life R&B singer Aaliyah in the Lifetime biopic “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B” (2014) brought her wider recognition, despite the film receiving mixed reviews.

Breakthrough with X-Men and Film Roles

Shipp’s breakthrough came when she was cast as the mutant Storm in the "X-Men" film franchise, beginning with “X-Men: Apocalypse” (2016). She reprised her role in “Dark Phoenix” (2019), establishing her presence within a high-profile, multi-film superhero franchise.

In addition to her work in science fiction, Shipp played Kimberly Woodruff, the wife of rapper Ice Cube, in the biographical drama “Straight Outta Compton” (2015). The film was both a critical and commercial success, further expanding her prominence in Hollywood.
