Background

Amy Lee Grant was born on November 25, 1960, in Augusta, Georgia. She was born as the youngest of four sisters. The Grant family settled in Nashville, Tennessee when Amy turned seven years old. She is the granddaughter of Nashville philanthropists, A. M. Burton and Lillie Burton. They both had membership in Nashville's Ashwood Church of Christ. Amy constantly mentions the influence they had on her evolution as a professional musician.

Grant attended high school at Harpeth Hall School, an all-girls school. In 1976, she wrote her first song titled "Mountain Man" which she played for her whole school. Not too long after she played her first song at school, her church youth-leader, Brown Bannister helped her record a demo which resulted in Grant being offered a contract with Word Studio five weeks before her 16th birthday. Grant went on to attend Furman University in 1978, In 1980, she switched to Vanderbilt University before she finally dropped out of college completely to pursue a career in music.

Marriage, Husband, and Children

Amy Lee Grant got married to her first husband, Christian musician Gary Chapman on June 19, 1982. The pair had three children together but ultimately the relationship ended up failing. In 1999, Grant filed for divorce from Chapman citing irreconcilable differences and it was finalized later that year. Grant revealed that her marriage to Chapman was rough from the start and they both agreed to marriage counseling. After a series of ups and downs, Grant tried to make things work but the relationship seemed destined to fail no matter what.

After divorcing Chapman in 1999, Grant moved out of the house with her children to the objection of Chapman who said it was her decision to end the marriage. About halfway through their marriage, Chapman began using drugs and that seemed to be the last straw for the Christian singer. He recovered from drug use in 1994 but by then their marital life had been pushed to the breaking point.

In 1993, Grant met Vince Gill who was married at the time to Janis Oliver. They were both married at the time but the pair began a friendship that would ultimately lead to marriage. In 1997, Grant learned that Gill had divorced his wife Oliver and just two years after that, Grant ended her own marriage to Chapman. Grant and Gill had a daughter together named Corrina Grant Gill who was born on March 12, 2001.

It took the birth of Grant's third child, and first with Gill, for her other children to finally feel that the family was one. Grant remains friends with Chapman and he also maintains a good relationship with his children despite Grant having primary custody. Gill even admitted he wrote his 1995 song "Whenever You Come Around" with Grant in mind which was four years before he would marry her. The song lyrics say, "The face of an angel; pretty eyes that shine. I lie awake at night wishing you were mine."
