Arthel Neville was born on October 20, 1962 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was to born her father, Art Neville and, mother Doris Neville. Art is a public figure who founded three music groups called The Hawketts, The Meters, and the Grammy Award-winning Neville Brothers. He is a singer, songwriter, and keyboardist. In an interview with New Orleans Magazine, Arthel talked about her how father's fame was not used to boost her own career, “Believe me, the name Neville didn't do anything for me in the field of journalism.”

Arthel's home frequently had multi-cultural, world-class musicians visiting, but outside of her home, she felt the implications of her race heavily. “I was maybe the fourth Black student to attend my private Catholic school”, she told Essence. “So I'm not naïve about racial differences.”

Arthel graduated from the St. Mary’s Dominican High School of New Orleans. She received a degree in journalism from the University of Texas. “I'm not without musical talent”, she told New Orleans Magazine. “It's just that I was always into writing.” She originally joined Xavier University for pharmacy but later switched to journalism. Before Texas University she also attended Southern Methodist University studying journalism but did not complete her degree there. “It was extremely tough. I was very overwhelmed and considered quitting college several times”, she told the Los Angeles Sentinel.

Marriage, Husband, and Kids

Arthel Neville was previously married to Derrick Lassic from 1995 to 1998. Derrick Lassic is an ex-Dallas Cowboy and actor known for movies such as Any Given Sunday (1999), NFL Monday Night Football (1970), and TNT Sunday Night Football (1990.)

In 1999, she met her current husband Taku Hirano, a drummer from Japan, while she was backstage at a concert. Arthel Neville married Taku Hirano in 2001.

Career

Before pursuing journalism, Arthel went to New York City for modeling and acting. She has done several commercials. Arthel has also acted in soap opera “Days of Our Lives” and appeared on popular shows such as Monk, Girlfriends, Moesha, Cybill, Living Single, and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. While she was attending college, as a junior, she started her career with KVUE-TV as a reporter.

Arthel Neville is the first African American woman to become the on-air reporter of KVUE-TV. The position included being on the streets covering live breaking news, politics, education, health, and human-interest stories. After graduating from her university, Arthel joined WWL as an anchor.

Arthel has also worked for CNN. She hosted her own show for the network titled TalkBack Live with Arthel Neville and thus became the first African-American woman to host her own signature show on CNN. She also anchored morning and daytime news and co-anchored weekend news with famous personality Anderson Cooper.
