Rebecca Lynn “Becky” Hammon was born on March 11, 1977, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Her father is Martin Hammon and her mother is Bev Hammon. She grew up with a sister and a brother. She played basketball for her high school team in South Dakota. In her young career, she was voted as Miss Basketball, and as a senior, she was South Dakota Player of the Year because she averaged 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 steals per game. In the same year, she was voted to be the Female Athlete of her graduating class.

Becky Hammon's scoring ability while playing on the Colorado State Rams helped her be nominated as All-American and Colorado Sportswoman of the year. Her team was able to get a record of 33-3 from 1998-1999 under her leadership. She surpassed Keith Van Horn to become the Western Athletic Conference's all-time leading scorer. She got the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the best senior player from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

In 2004, she was inducted in the Colorado State University Sports Hall of Fame and her jersey of number 25 in Colorado was retired in the Moby Arena. After going undrafted in 1999, she played eight seasons with the New York Liberty before being traded to the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2007. She got a nickname of Big Shot Becky because she was capable to shot in just a few seconds.

The following year she went to play for the national team in Russia and this was criticized by Anne Donovan who was the USA coach at that time. Hammon grew up in USA but in 2008 she became a naturalized Russian and played for the Russian team from 2008 until 2012. She said that the decision to join Russia was her way to go to the Olympics Games. She won a bronze medal with Russia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and played in 2009 for Eurobasket, in 2010, World Championship and 2012 Olympics. In 2011, she became the seventh player in WNBA history to reach 5000 points. She retired from playing after the 2014 WNBA season.

In 2014, San Antonio Spurs hired her to be an assistant coach and this made her the second female assistant coach in the history of the NBA. She was also the first female to be an assistant coach full time.

On December 31, 2021, the Las Vegas Aces named Hammon their head coach. She led the Aces to WNBA championships in 2022, 2023, and 2025, and was named WNBA Coach of the Year in 2022. In 2023, she was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
