Early Life and Education

Bess Armstrong, an accomplished American actress known for her work in film, television, and theater, was born on December 11, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland. She is not Native American, contrary to some mistaken reports. Armstrong was raised in an academically inclined family; her mother, Louise Allen, and her father, Alexander Armstrong, were both educators and shared a strong appreciation for the arts. Inspired by her parents' passion, Bess developed an early interest in performing and began acting in stage plays during her high school years.

She attended the Bryn Mawr School for Girls in Baltimore, where she actively participated in school theater productions. Continuing her academic and artistic pursuits, she later graduated from Brown University with a degree in Latin and Theater Arts. During her educational journey, Armstrong performed in more than 100 stage plays and student productions, gaining critical experience and honing her craft as a performer.

Personal Life

In 1985, Armstrong married John Fiedler, with whom she has enjoyed a long and stable marriage. The couple has one child together. Contrary to earlier reports, they do not have three children nor two daughters who are teachers. Previously, Armstrong was briefly married to Chris Carreras in 1983; the marriage ended in divorce the following year.
