Clemence Guichard was born on November 30, 1982, to French actor and writer Étienne Guichard and a teacher. She received her education at La Source, a bilingual alternative school in Meudon, where she studied in both French and English. Her first stage experience came at a young age when her father gave her a minor role with just two lines in one of his productions.
The influence of her father, a seasoned actor, writer, and theater director, played a significant role in Clemence’s decision to pursue acting. Adopting her mother’s surname as her stage name, she became professionally known as Clémence Poésy. Despite not considering herself a socially popular student, Poésy found solace and purpose in the performing arts.
For her formal acting education, she studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique (CNSAD), the Atelier International de Blanche Salant et Paul Weaver, and later, the University of Nanterre. Beginning her career with French television, she appeared in series such as Les Monos (1999) and Un Homme en Colère. She then acted in Franco-German productions including Olgas Sommer (2002) and Bienvenue chez les Rozes ("Welcome to the Roses", 2003).
Thanks to her bilingual training, Poésy transitioned to English-language productions. Her first major English-speaking role was as Mary, Queen of Scots, in BBC's 2004 mini-series Gunpowder, Treason & Plot. Her performance earned her the 2005 Golden FIPA Award for Best Actress in a TV Serial, drawing international attention to her talent.
This acclaim led to her casting as Fleur Delacour in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). Her portrayal of the graceful French witch became a fan favorite and solidified her presence in international cinema.
