Courtney Thorne-Smith is an American actress born on November 8, 1967, in San Francisco, California. She was raised in Menlo Park, a suburb of San Francisco, by her parents, Walter Smith and Lora Thorne. After her parents divorced when she was seven, Thorne-Smith spent time living with both of them. She initially attended Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton, California, and later graduated from Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley in 1985.
Thorne-Smith made her feature film debut in 1986 in the coming-of-age drama Lucas, appearing alongside Corey Haim, Winona Ryder, and Charlie Sheen. She continued building her film career throughout the late 1980s with roles in Welcome to 18 (1986), Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise (1987), and Summer School (1987). She also starred in the 1990 beach volleyball-themed sports drama Side Out.
In 1998, Thorne-Smith appeared in the comedy Chairman of the Board opposite comedian Carrot Top. She later took on a role in the 2009 Lifetime television movie Sorority Wars.
Thorne-Smith began her television career with guest appearances in 1980s series such as Growing Pains and Fast Times. Her breakout role came in 1992 when she began starring as Alison Parker on the popular primetime drama Melrose Place. In her personal life, Thorne-Smith married geneticist Andrew Conrad in June 2000, though the couple divorced the following year. She later married Roger Fishman on January 1, 2007. The couple welcomed a son, Jacob Emerson Fishman, in 2008.
