Early Life and Education

Damon Laurence Lindelof was born on April 24, 1973, in Teaneck, New Jersey. Despite warnings from his parents that excessive television would rot his brain, Lindelof spent much of his youth immersed in TV and film. He went on to earn a degree in film from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, nurturing his early passion for storytelling and screenwriting.

Career Beginnings in Television

After graduating, Lindelof moved to Los Angeles, which he considered his version of graduate school. He began working at Paramount Pictures as a creative executive for producer Alan Ladd Jr., but soon realized his true passion lay in writing for television. Trading in his business attire for a more casual wardrobe, he accepted a job as a writer's assistant on Kevin Williamson’s drama series Wasteland. His talent quickly became evident, and he was promoted to staff writer.

From Crossing Jordan to Lost

Lindelof continued building his television credentials with writing and producing stints on CBS's Nash Bridges and NBC's medical drama Crossing Jordan, where he worked for three seasons. His breakthrough came when he partnered with J.J. Abrams to create the ABC drama Lost. Developed in just twelve weeks, the unconventional and high-budget pilot focused on the survivors of a plane crash stranded on a mysterious island. The series became a cultural phenomenon, earning several accolades including a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for "Best Drama Series" in its first season.

Transition to Film and Screenwriting Success

Following the conclusion of Lost, Lindelof transitioned into writing for film. He co-wrote and produced two Star Trek films and contributed to the screenplay for the action-adventure film Cowboys & Aliens, which was based on the comic book series of the same name. His other notable screenwriting credits include Ridley Scott’s science fiction film Prometheus and Disney’s Tomorrowland, directed by Brad Bird.

The Hunt and Political Controversy

In August 2019, Universal Pictures put a temporary halt on marketing for the upcoming satirical thriller The Hunt following a series of mass shootings in the United States. Written by Lindelof and Nick Cuse, the film stars Betty Gilpin and Hilary Swank and centers on a controversial plot in which people from opposing political backgrounds are hunted for sport. A contemporary take on Richard Connell’s short story The Most Dangerous Game, the film sparked debate even before its release due to its politicized themes.

Damon Lindelof is married to Heidi Mary Fugeman. The couple has one child together and maintains a private family life. They are known to share a strong partnership and have not publicly indicated any marital issues.
