Family and Dance Education

Hough hails from a family deeply rooted in dance. Both of his grandparents were dancers, and his parents, Marianne and Bruce Hough, met as members of a dance team in Idaho. Derek, the only son among five siblings, began learning dance at a young age. At the age of 12, he moved to London to further his dance training. Although the move was initially intended to last one year, he remained there for a decade.

While in London, he was joined by his sister, Julianne Hough, who returned to the United States after five years. The siblings studied at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, alongside their friend Mark Ballas, the son of their dance coach. The trio formed a close bond and received training in various performing arts disciplines, including music and dance. Together, they formed a musical group called 2B1G and participated in competitions across the country.

Early Achievements and Film Appearance

Hough’s early career was marked by numerous accolades. In 2002, he became the IDSF World Youth Latin Champion, demonstrating his exceptional dance talent. He later received the New York Dance Alliance’s Outstanding Dancer Award, further cementing his prominence in the dance community.

In 2013, Hough played a leading role in “Make Your Move,” a South Korean-American dance film that showcased his performing abilities beyond the ballroom.

Success on “Dancing with the Stars”

Hough made his first appearance on “Dancing with the Stars” during the fourth season as a guest instructor. He officially joined the cast as a professional dancer in the fifth season and participated regularly through the twenty-first season. Derek Hough holds the record for the most wins by a professional dancer on the show, with victories in Seasons 7, 10, 11, 16, 17, and 21.

His least successful run occurred in Season 6, where he and actress Shannon Elizabeth finished in sixth place. Despite occasional suggestions that he might retire from the competition, Hough remained a consistent presence on the show, repeatedly returning for new seasons.
