Alan Arkin is known as an American actor, director, and screenwriter. He is most famous for his roles in The Russians Are Coming and The Kominsky Method.
Alan Wolf Arkin was born on March 26, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was 11 years of age. After his high school graduation, he studied drama at Los Angeles City College and at Los Angeles State College. He additionally quickly went to Bennington College in Vermont. Arkin moved to New York City in 1955 to carve out a career in the entertainment business.
His first film appearance was in the motion picture Calypso Heat Wave in 1957. He joined the new Second City improv sketch group in Chicago, and it was there that he got his first genuine training in theater. When Arkin came back to New York, he performed in a 1961 Broadway show called From the Second City. In 1963, he started the role of David Kolowitz in the Broadway production of Enter Laughing, based on a novel by Carl Reiner. He won acclamations for his performance in the Broadway production Luv directed by Mike Nichols.
Arkin's performance as the dull, grouchy, heroin-sniffing grandfather in Little Miss Sunshine (2006), a comedy about a broken family driving cross country to go to a kid talent show, earned him the Academy Award for best supporting actor. His next movies included The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006), the big-screen treatment of the 1965–70 TV series Get Smart, and the nostalgic motion picture Marley and Me (2008). Arkin was selected for another Oscar for his turn as the reckless studio official entrusted with coming up with a persuading counterfeit film in Argo (2012).
Arkin later appeared in Stand Up Guys (2012) and Going in Style (2017). In 2019, he played a Wall Street big shot in Dumbo, Tim Burton's cutting edge version of the 1941 Disney cartoon. During this time Arkin kept on appearing on TV, and in the Netflix series The Kominsky Method (2018) he featured as the long-term specialist of a maturing actor turned acting coach.
In September 2019, at the 2019 Emmy Awards show, Arkin was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series because of his performance in The Kominsky Method.
Alan has been married multiple times in his life. He married Jeremy Yaffe in 1955 but got divorced following 6 years. They had two children, Adam Arkin and Matthew Arkin. In 1967, he got married to an actress named Barbara Dana. They had a child named Anthony Arkin who himself is an actor.
